Trouble Shooting

  • Signs of a dirty Burner
    • There is a red/orange flame instead of the typical blue flame
    • The flame is more visible exiting the exhaust than normal.
    • The EDI does not seem hot enough
    • Maintaining a flame is difficult / blows out easily
    • Makes popping and cracking sounds
    • The Burner has 4x 3mm air intake ports around its circumference just inside the Element opening, small bits of burnt wool can partially block these and cause the burner under perform. Running the EDI for a prolonged time with blocked airports will cause a carbon build up on the LPG jet. It is best to clean the airports as soon as you notice a change in performance. Even cleaning periodically at the end of the day when you put the battery on charge can be good preventative maintenance.

  • Cleaning the Burner
    • An easy start is to blow compressed air down the exhaust ports, we want to blow the debris out not further in.
    • If this fails we need to remove the element using the two fastenings, be careful not to loose the 2 washers that go between the element and the mount, Then slide the element off the burner. It will now be easy to see any debris and remove it. Compressed air can be used, blow air in where the flame would normally come out to avoid lodging anything deeper.
    • If there is a large amount of black soot it would be a good idea to unscrew the burner from the brass tube that is fixed to the mounting arm. Using a small hexagonal key down the back of the burner remove the jet and clean any Carbon buildup from the end of it. Then reassemble.
    • Always test the burner before refitting the element.
    • If you are still having trouble go through the category below incase its not the burner at fault, or give us a call.
    • My EDI is not maintaining heat and goes out
      • Check LPG bottle for gas
      • Check Regulator setting
      • Check Burner air intake ports are clear
      • Check gas line for blockages
        • Turn gas bottle on
        • Adjust Regulator to 30PSI
        • Turn gas bottle off and time long it takes for regulator to reach 0PSI
        • Less than 30 seconds - there must still be debris in the burner. Refer to - Cleaning the Burner
        • Greater than 30 Seconds - Run test again with hose disconnected at the handpiece
        • Less than 30 seconds - replace Burner
        • More than 30 seconds - Faulty regulator
      • The CPD link unclips
        • Is the clip still intact or is the clip broken?
        • Loosen the nut at the clip end 1/8 of a turn
        • Remove the CPD link, clean all surfaces oil and refit, tighten flange nuts then loosen 1/8 of a turn.
        • The clip is intact but continues to release
          • With the jaws in the open position and the clip released can the bottom jaw move freely?
            • No - Loosen jaw lock nut, loosen pivot bolt and retighten lock nut so the jaw moves freely.
        • Using a small flat head screw driver lever clips in a very small amount whilst unclipped, consider ordering a replacement if you do this.
      • The Element is miss aligned
        • Has the element moved on the fixing bolts?
          • Loosen bolts, relocate element re-tighten to 11nm
        • Is the cutting edge still straight? if not it will have to be returned for re-shaping - or replace
        • If you do not have time to return or replace mid season use a fine file to remove material from the cutting edge until element and bottom jaw align along their length. For best results heat iron for 5 minutes at 10PSI to check this. A gap may appear when heated next due to thermal expansion if you do not.
      • Device responds oddly to trigger press
        • Discontinue use immediately and return to EDI
